nothing is worth having if it isn’t worth fighting for.
i’m blown away by how much money some people have but also incredibly humbled by how much they give away. i just read this article in the chronicle of philanthropy highlighting the biggest donors of 2008, and they range from $30 million to $5.2 billion, supporting the likes of education, public service, art, medicine.
the most absolutely hilarious and sad thing is that the biggest donor, leona m. helmsey, bequeathed $5.2 billion to what is now one of the wealthiest foundations in america. her cause? dogs. DOGS. the lady gave $12 million to her own dog (compare that to $52 million given to all the rest of her family members). in 2003, she had apparently written into her foundation’s mission statement that she also wanted to provide medical care for poor people and children, but only one year later “dropped the provision to help people.”
WHAT?!
sometimes you want to say something that would mean the whole world to you… but when the words leave your mouth, you realize there’s absolutely no point.
